The Death of Diana: Conspiracy Theories

Introduction

What was the real cause of the tragic death that shocked the world? Diana, Princess of Wales died on August 31, 1997, in a car collision near central Paris, along with her driver, Henri Paul, and boyfriend, Dodi Fayed (“Diana, Princess of Wales, Killed in Car Crash”). Henri Paul was reported to be driving forty miles per hour over the posted speed limit; he lost control of the car and crashed into a pillar beside the highway (Nicolaou). Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, but Diana was quickly rushed to the hospital, where she was in surgery for around two hours before she passed due to a chest injury (Mansoor). Was the death of the “People’s Princess” truly a terrible accident? Since her death, several conspiracy theories have arisen:

  1. The royal family, specifically Prince Charles, had Diana killed.

  2. The car collision was caused by the paparazzi.

  3. The driver, Henri Paul, intentionally crashed the car.

Let’s examine the theories surrounding the death of Diana, with the most likely scenario being a murder-for-hire by Prince Charles.
